inanedirk: (Gir - D'oh)
... even though I generally like and enjoy Splinter Cell, I do have some slight issues with the third title in the series.
I guess with the kind of weaponry you work with in the game, "realism" isn't really such a good point of discussion. But I'll write about it anyway:

The turrets irked me in previous games already. I can understand a motion sensor scanning the area and steering the machine gun to attack anything that moves, okay. But they've also got some I.F.F. software, which I think stands for "Intelligent Friend / Foe" detection system. In other words, when playing, you're the only valid target for the turret, until you manage to sneak around it and hack its software to turn off I.F.F. They really should've incorportated a realistic explanation for this, like RFID or something in the enemies' uniform which the turret recognises as friendly. That way you could also sneak past those things more easily by just carrying around an unconcious enemy d: (like they did in Chaos Theory with the alarm lasers).

And now for some more unrealistic stuff. During a mission in Seoul, there are unmanned helicopter thingies flying around, with IR cam and, you guessed it, an MG. AND I.F.F. software apparently, because the only thing it shoots at is you. Now, funnily enough, the only thing you can destroy those things with is the sniper attachment to your weapon, which in this mission is optional. So, you can't kill it with your default weapon, shotgun attachment, pistol, or hand grenades. But with a sniper rifle. Which I didn't have, of course d;
Anyway, now this is what really irks me. You have this one tool always with you that disrupts anything electric or electronic for a short while. You can aim it at lights to turn them off for a bit, or at surveilance cameras, etc. You can also use it on those helicopter things. And now, get this, the helicopter will not crash, it will just stay in the air with the cam and turret disabled, and just continue on its route after a few seconds. How weird is that?!

Lastly, an issue with level design. I just passed and incredibly difficult, and yet again, unrealistic part of the game.
You're in a boiler room, and The Bad Guy has just put 3 explosive devices inside to stop you from hunting him. Not only do you have to find and disarm those explosives in 1 minute 45 seconds (instead of just running out the door), you also have to fight about 4 enemies with NV googles, tasked to stop you from disarming the bombs. Yeah, because they wouldn't blow up along with the bombs, would they? Also, they're really hard to kill because they have superior assault rifles, and, I guess, because they get a better frame rate than me when using their NV ): ...

Anyway. That provides suction d;
