It was the first time in a very, very long time yesterday that I left a concert totally disappointed. Chrischi sent me an e-mail earlier and wrote "other than the concert I had a good time yesterday", and the same goes for me.
We knew in advance that Anette, their new singer, sounded very different to their old one, Tarja. The problem is though, that their song writer had Tarja's voice in mind when writing the older songs, so they just don't work when sung by Anette. Tarja has an education as classical singer, so her voice range is like 2-3 times that of Anette's.
So, each and every song that Tarja originally did was a total disappointment yesterday. Those songs just didn't sound "right".
What's worse is that Anette doesn't even seem to manage to sing in such a way that she did on their latest albums. She can't seem to hold the higher tones when singing live.
Oh, they played Last of the Wilds which is an awesome instrumental track on their latest album. And, guess what? They had guest musicians playing the tin whistle, pipes, and fiddle when recording the album. Yesterday, it was all played on synthesizer. That really didn't sound good. They should've just hired some local musicians to play those parts.
Long story short, unless they're doing a Nightwish - Tarja - Reunion Tour, Nightwish are pretty much dead for me ...
To end this review on a positive note, the lights and special effects were real cool.
