I've got a new router / DSL modem.
For about a month now I've had trouble with my internet connection. My ISP didn't bother to do anything about it, claiming that it's probably the router I use. So I bought this D-Link DSL-2543B thing. I can hook up 4 PCs to it via ethernet, and it connects directly to the phone outlet, so there's no need for an additional modem kinda device anymore. It means there's one thing less that can break and cause trouble.
Anyway, I tried connecting the router last night, and failed. It seemed to work just fine, all the lights were on that were supposed to be on, I could connect to the web configuration, change settings etc.
Only thing it didn't do was actually connecting via PPPoE. Not knowing the correct settings for VPI / VCI / MTU, and not knowing whether the connection uses LLC or VC-Mux (whatever that is), didn't help of course.
Now the problem is, my ISP isn't really much help with these issues. When you phone them to ask for these settings, the first thing you get to hear is "you're not supposed to even set those things, so why do you ask?". And when you explain that you bought a modem/router to replace the crappy one they gave you, they pretty much refuse to help you on the grounds that you use unsupported hardware, even though you're not asking for hardware support, just for the settings you need.
Anyway, I managed to get the VPI / VCI settings, which turned out to be correct in the first place. As to MTU, the reply I got was "you don't need to set an MTU at all". Well, it's a required field in the config, so I kinda do. But anyway, what about LLC / VC-Mux? "Never heard of those, dunno what it even is". Yeah, thanks. (note that this is a small local ISP, so the people answering the phones mostly are the people administrating the dsl lines etc, they're not just call center employees who don't know the first thing about the internets.).
Anyway. I was close to repackaging the router and returning it because I couldn't get it to work.
Last thing I tried was, trying a different password for the connection. I'd tried that last night too. I guess I must've typo'ed, because now it works. -_-
